Last Fall our students at GBE and many of other York County schools took on the task of raising monarch caterpillars in their classrooms and tagging them as they started their migration to the overwintering grounds in Mexico. Two of our schools have just found out that a monarch released at their school COMPLETED the incredible journey. The butterflies' data is as follows;

York High School - Amber Lamonte teacher:

Tag #XBY 120 Female Released on 9/20/17. Tag recovery in El Rosario, Mexico, reported on 2/20/18. About 2,886 miles!*

Yorktown Elementary - Barbara Westlund teacher:

Tag #XBY 022 Female Released on 9/20/17. Tag recovery in El Rosario, Mexico, reported on 2/20/18. About 2,887 miles!*

Tag #XBY 024 Male Released on 9/20/17. Tag recovery in Sierra Chincua, Mexico, reported on 2/10/18 . About 2885 miles!*

The schools being in such close proximity and the same day release make you wonder if they all traveled together. As so much research is still taking place it is gratifying to know that our teachers and students acting as Citizen Scientists are making a difference. This data can be found on the monarchwatch.org site.

*Mileage does not account for butterflies being blown off course by weather.

Middle School PTSA
Parents of rising middle schoolers! Grafton Middle School is looking for parents to serve on their PTSA board.
Becoming involved in the PTSA is a GREAT way to meet other middle school families and get acclimated to middle school!!

This year’s PTSA Board was mostly made up of 8th grade parents and unfortunately we will have a huge turnover. We are in need of a PTSA President, 2nd Vice President, and Secretary for the Executive Board. We are also seeking two committee positions, Volunteer Coordinator and Membership Chair.

Without a president or secretary; Grafton Middle School will not have an active PTSA. No PTSA means: No Clipper Crew, No Teacher’s Luncheons/Gifts for Teacher’s Appreciation Week, No Educational Scholarships/Funding for Student Recognition programs, No PTSA membership, No Helping Hands, No Locker Works, No Reflections program, No Annual Dodgeball Tournament, and No All Grade School Dances.
Students and faculty at Grafton look forward to these programs, which make it the wonderful school community it is.

Please consider volunteering, because without these programs, Grafton will not be the same community. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at shannong0678@gmail.com. "

Thank you!

Shannon George

Why join the PTA?
Your membership helps our school have a voice! The more memberships the bigger impact and higher chance our voices can be heard not just in the school but in the state of Virginia and the National PTA. Also, when you join you are helping support students, teachers, school functions, and school grounds. It takes a village to give the best to our kids. It keeps you informed with what is going on in and around the school and honestly we couldn't do the things we do without you. You will also receive great discounts.
It DOESN'T mean you HAVE to volunteer or you have to show up to our meetings. Yes, we would love to have you and get to know you, but we understand how busy life is. Come when and if you can. You are always welcome to join us. We love new ideas and are always looking for ways to improve.

How long do memberships last? When you pay the $6 per member it is valid until the beginning of the next school year. You have to renew your memberships every year. We are hoping to make the process easier by next year.

Who can join?
We have parents, grandparents, other family members, friends, students, and business owners join. Basically, anyone who wants to support GBES and student.

Remember to check YCSD and GBE social media for important announcements.
Thank you for all your support,

Grafton Bethel Elementary PTA
